April ushers in the harshest months for the people of Solapur, a hot, arid district in western India where water becomes increasingly scarce as temperatures rise. At the height of summer, residents can wait a week or longer for water to flow from their taps.
According to local authorities and residents, just ten years ago water was supplied every other day in Solapur, located roughly 400 kilometres inland from Mumbai.
