Handing Our Land, Copper, and Water to China

If reducing America’s reliance on hostile foreign powers for critical minerals is a national security priority—a goal that leaders across the political spectrum broadly support—then we should take a hard look at what’s happening at Oak Flat. This sacred site, with vital water resources east of Phoenix and home to a large copper deposit, is on track to be transferred by the U.S. Forest Service to Resolution Copper, a company jointly owned by BHP and Rio Tinto. Rio Tinto’s largest investor is China’s state-owned Chinalco. We must ensure this project truly serves America’s long-term national security interests.
